WRITE A WINNING CHEVENING CAREER PLAN ESSAY

Career Plan: 

*Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)*

This is an underrated essay. Anyone can write a career plan essay, but not everyone can write a winning chevening careee plan essay. As a leadership training award, Chevening are investing in your studies with the belief that you will come back and apply your leadership skills in your home country. How exactly do you want to impact your country? They want to know every plan for the next 10 years. 

First off, I mentioned my main post-study goal. Then I laid out a foundation, which is why. Before I later broke it down into three; short term(1-2 years), mid term (3-5years) and long term(6-10 years) goals.

Explain in detail (as many details as you can fit in a 500 word essay) what you want to achieve e.g 

“In the next 1-2 years I will like to apply what I have learned in my masters program towards achieving my future goals as a practicing psychologist. I will do that by going back to my work place (a Uni) and transferring to the Counselling and Human Dev Dept. There, I will not only gain practical experience but also study students psychology and how best to achieve my mid term goal’.

Then list your mid-term goal. My mid-term goal after working with students is to set up a consultancy firm that will work with private and public institutions in introducing Mental Health Studies as a general course to tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Make sure everything flows. Make sure one point leads to another. You can’t talk about how you want to study an LLM in Oil and Gas law so you can have enough skills to one enable you to drill an oil rig offshore! Or you want to study Medicine so you can bake a cake with a medical apparatus made of fondant on top, or something equally ludicrous. One story should lead to another. 

Listen, this is what is happening; you are a potential asset; I (the British Government that is) want to invest in you. Sell your pitch to me on why I should do that and why you will yield a great return on investment. Convince me on why I should spend a hefty amount of money on you in particular. Forget everyone else, it is your vision I want to picture and invest in.

Make sure to use figures and stats. Numbers, names, dates. Make sure your passion is communicated well and felt by your readers.

Mention what the UK government is doing about your career goals in your country and link it to what you intend to do. Mention how you want partner with the UK government to achieve that. In case you are finding it hard to get a project that the British government is doing in your field, I’ll advise you to research on a person recognized by them who practices in your field and suggest to partner with him.

This is not just a winning strategy or for you to write a winning chevening career plan essay, this should be what you act believe in and are set to do. Believe me, you will be monitored.
